New Work!

Ooohh! Madagascar Fauna! Nerd reason why they are so cool: some abhorently large percentage of species are endemic.(80%?) Which means they appear NO WHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD. Like this Mantella Frog that is only found in Ranomafana National Park. As far as anyone knows. Its completely mind shattering to see so much incredible diversity living on a knife edge. If anywhere in the world should be conserved, I vote Madagascar. The medicinal plants alone would knock your socks off. Seriously. All the poisonous plants are named after Mother-in-laws, by the way. The Malagasy people live in the coolest place in the world AND have a sense of humor. I'd be jealous if they weren't all absurdly poor. They have the upside of being completely rich in spirit. I know it sounds sappy, but its true. Anyway, here's my tiny response to the trip. I'm trying to decide what to do with it next???
Edit: This is frog I drew here but I have my own reference picture. Bwahahahahaha.

More Old work..." The Girl Who Lost Her Words"

I like this one. It started my exploration of "obsession." Everyone has obsession, but perhaps to different degrees. ;) I wish I could color this... but not really because then I'd just want to fix the line work. Eh. NEXT!

Today was awesome! I woke up at 8:30... AM... BY MY OWN FREE WILL. Then I proceeded to get a ton of stuff done from there. Mostly I just ran errands but I feel really good about it and I don't know why. Maybe its because I did nothing but go to Kat's wedding over the break... Which was AMAZING. Everything was so tasteful and autumn-ey. Sigh. It was absolutely perfect.Maybe I'll most some pictures.... maybe. In any case, No matter how much I get done there's always more, but it feels so good to make a sizable dent in it. like. pow. kaplow. I beat you up imaginary villain character. Here's a list of all the shit I did today. Don't feel obliged to read this, this is more for me.

So yeah! Have a great day!

Existential Crisis

I find them hilarious.(xkcd) But really, Sometimes its hard to stay grounded. Writing my project proposal I kept thinking about all the terrible things happening in the world and its rather debilitating. You want to do something, make some kind of difference yet your actions seem futile. You can only really change yourself. But maybe, that's the only thing that matters. Yeah yeah, current news is absurdly depressing, but shouldn't knowing you've done your part be enough? I find it absolutely aggravating that some people care to little. But it isn't it also painful to care to much? I would never suggest not to care. Apathy is not the answer. I'm suggesting to choose your battles. Frankly, we can't win them all. But we can win a few, or maybe several, or maybe a whole slew and before we know it things will be changing. People should be ambitious and try to do insurmountable tasks(cough: sisyphus) but we cannot let ourselves we waited down with the fear of failure. The only thing we can do is try and in the end that is the only thing that has ever made a difference. Trying is the only thing that matters. What does it matter if you've failed when you've never tried in the first place? Let me take it a step back. If you don't try you've already failed. The guilt is on your shoulders, its your neglected responsibility. If you've tried and failed at least it shows you care. Perhaps through your failure, it will pave the road for others to meet your intended goal. Life isn't certain. Life isn't easy. We know this. The trick is accepting this and moving the eff on. We must plow forward, even if we plow into a wall. We'll still be better off than the guy pondering at the starting line. So yeah. Do stuff. Make art, write, debate, speak, dance, sing or educate. It doesn't matter what you do as long as you do something. You'll feel better about yourself and the world. It may seem a tiny task, but honestly, what else can be done? Take solace in the fact that you are part of the solution, not the problem.

Sidenote related to my project: I think that storytelling is what makes us uniquely human. Our ability to encapsulate an incident in time and relate it to someone wholly unrelated to the incident is strangely unique. Storytelling is how we learn, entertain and share. It makes our species, our existence what we are. How different would life be without it? Storytelling is intrinsically a part of our psyche. Its been passed on for eons of generations and now there is no way to separate our lives from this phenomenon. I'm okay with that. :) Illustrating takes aspects of storytelling (characters, emotion, enviorment) and adds new elements (color, lighting, mood, composition) to make these stories tangible. What is interesting to me is the vastly different interpretations that can be made, an illustration can solidify an idea or totally obscure it. Its all up to the audience which I find exciting, if not a little terrifying. The possibilities are endless. I want to create a million works for a million people just to prove that no one thought would be exactly the same. They can be in the same thread, but each is uniquely personalized by the viewers prior experience. The goal as an illustrator is to appeal to the senses of a majority of people but still present a work that is interesting and intriguing. It is definitely a balancing act, but one I take on with great fever. Who could ask for a more stimulating task?
Just some thoughts rattling around in my head.
Have a nice day!

All nighter time

There comes a time when I am too stressed to sleep. Which is fine, actually, because I have too much work to do anyway. Though I do like sleeping... I dreamt it snowed last night, it was all very poetic. It hadn't really snowed and I strangely felt sad. Also, this says dreamt is not a real word. Well, it should be. This is my work in progress for the international show.

It's not what I really wanted, but I guess it'll do. I suppose if I didn't procrastinate so much I wouldn't have this problem.... dur.

If anyone one likes Lemurs this is a great site:Duke Lemur Center So many babies! eek! I want a pet AyeAye so bad. It can chill with my nest of bats. It'll be great. Everyone will be afraid to visit me. lol.

Back to the grind! Time to be super productive! I am a prismacolor machine!!!!

Are you okay?

Today in ruokay day. At least in Australia... which means it was yesterday for them but today for us. Yeah. Think about it.

So yeah, Are you ok? Ask your friends. It means alot to them that you care. I assume you have friends.

IP is highly frustrating because not one of my advisers seems to understand what I want to do. The exceptions are my boyfriend, Joe Trumpey, my mom, and some close friends. Basically, more rational minded and not necessarily art minded people who are not in my section get it. I admit, it's my fault for not being able to express myself well and its my challenge for choosing such a complicated project. But really? Really? REALLY? I don't think my GSIs and professors understand what they don't understand. haha. They seem to think I don't know what I want. False. I know precisely what I want, and don't want. I just don't know how to tell you people. Exasperated Sigh. In any case, let me attempt to organize my thoughts here.

Facts:
My IP is a narrative illustration.
I'm using the myth of Sisyphus as a metaphor for life.
Life is struggle. (cite: Buddhism, Camus, general philosopherizers)
Like Camus, I agree that we cannot rely on the future for our happiness.
We must appreciate the present to be actually happy.
Therefore we must imagine Sisyphus as happy.
Happiness is different for everyone, but for me the most essential and basic happiness in nature.
I will convey this happiness in Sisyphus by illustrating the marvel of the mountain.
To really reach viewers and convey that Sisyphus is really content with his burden he must actively choose to start over once he finally reaches the summit.
Important factors in my work will be lighting, composition and facial/body expression. These are always important in art, but they are integral to my piece to achieve my message.

Challenges:
Bridging the gap between being content with labor and the American need to consume and to have is going to be largely difficult. People, in general, are very opposed to seeing Sisyphus as a happy person. Even though their lives are largely like his eternal duty they are abhorred to think of his destiny as theirs. Getting people to accept the mountain as a metaphor for their life is hard to imagine.

Unknown:
How many panels it will take. Oh lord I don't know.
Does it matters if people understand it? I expect everyone to take away different interpretations, and obviously not everyone is going to agree with me. There are plenty of great art works that are great because they are a mystery.

Blarghhh. So that's where I am right now. The most important thing I learned this week was when Joe said that I'm more interested in the cultural relevance and not the myth itself. The myth is a metaphor, a vehicle, not the entirety of the work.

In any case. LOOK AT THIS!
http://news.ninemsn.com.au/glance/8100244/200-new-species-found-in-png

Bats! Must have a panel of bats! Yay! No one is surprised!

Also:

SHE LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE NANA. THIS MADE ME SO HAPPY. CAPITAL LETTERS.

So in conclusion, there are several people who I find highly inspiring that make me super excited for IP. And then there are some people who make me wanna hit my head on a wall... such is life. :) It should be my prerogative to surround myself with talented people who understand where I'm coming from. Like you. :)
I hope you have a nice day!

negelct.

It has happened here. I sincerely intend to reverse that. There are many posts to come i currently caught in the whirl wind that is 'IP.' It feels more like being sucked down a whirl pool of shadowy senior year project doubt. Forgive my pessimism, this is a lovely opportunity to strut my stuff before released into the art world. Of course, I would be lying if I didn't admit the system is quite vague and generally self defeating. Sigh. I find that in the face of great challenge is when the human spirit shows its best colors. Which, actually, is what my project is all about. Human struggle is constant and unyeilding. The way I see it, you can either run from it or learn from it. (please forgive the rafiki quote) Better put, you either absolve struggle or revel in it. This is what I plan to enlighten. I shall revel in my own struggles to enlighten the rest of the world to value theirs. A little meta isn't it? With struggle, trial or even pain, humans are nothing. Lifeless and incomplete it is only though hardships that we can find meaning. No task is too meaningless or trivial. Every person suffers differently. The only way to relieve this suffering is to be aware of it, accept it, and persevere. What other alternative is there? We must find happiness in the little moments and in every moment. Those who wait for tomorrow and its glories will be disappointed to find that tomorrow never comes. So rejoice in the present, rejoice in your suffering and you will find that you are not suffering anymore.
whhoooo. That was heady but I needed to get that out there. Hope you don't think I'm entirely a cuckoo. Well, you might anyway so I guess that's ok. Picture posts by the end of the week! (If those jerks fix the gd scanners grumblgrumble) Hope you have a wonderful day!

I Eat Comics for Breakfast.

This is getting a little out of hand. Once I start reading something... I simply can't stop. If only it was working that way for my flash animation. I wish I had learned flash before I learned AfterEffects. Then I wouldn't know how STUPID it is. Since its only vectors and everything has to be able to change into an equation it seems realing limiting animation-wise. I suppose the interactive part is a plus. If only a knew a damn thing about coding. Oh. I also decided I complain too much. Why? Because I complain about complaining. I don't think it can get any worse than that. lol.

I wanna work on my novella but I have to finish this animation first. :( waaahhhh. I've finally got the bulk of my reference people to email me their pictures. I have some sketches to post...but I have to travel far into and through and around the snow to scan them so sit tight folks.
Ceramics! Is awesome! Yay! I making strange little mutant bunny things... There is really no way to describe it so I'll post pictures later. My first vase is glazed! Now I just have to wait for the last firing! Exciting! Its this strange crackly turquoise blue stuff. Not sure who gets it. I guess it depends if it turns out well lol. The vases kind of look like really skinny sake bottles. sigh. I suppose that's not a bad thing. I come with an awesome project. Too bad I don't have the time to do it. Make 20 vases or so and give them to 20 friends across the nation. Make a website with a map pinpointing where each vase is. After some amount of time, the person has to give the vase to someone else. They pass on the website address and I can make a trail of where each bottle is going. Wouldn't that be sweet!? Not going to happen in 4 weeks. lol. Maybe someday....

My dear friend Alisha knit me a Centaur!!!!! ITS SO COOL. She has a site....http://www.etsy.com/shop/battycraftings She has lots of thing for sale and I think she really enjoys commissions. At least she did mine. *purr face*

I gave up procrastinating for lent. Miles says it's impossible. I'm not really concerned with if i do it perfectly. Just that I'm making a conscious effort not to squander my time on silly things. Like facebook and its terribly dull yet addicting games. The most important rule to not procrastinating is figuring out your priorities. At the moment mine are food, making this headache go away and animation. Everything else is jumbly after that because I need to get this done first. lol. ermmm. Showing off my centaur is up there too. SO CUTE.

Sketches! Gypsy Circus Delight!

Hurrah! sketches! For my novella!
Gypsy Circus delight!
This anna! kinda looks like her but not really....

DJ is the main character, who is having gypsy identity problems.

No idea why but she made us do it on green paper. Being a comic I really have to exagerate features so its obvious to the reader which character is which. so in general the sketches aren't a very good likeness. i just take my features and amplify them to my liking. bwahhahaha. I'm like an evil genetic scientist with a pencil. so no one is allowed to be offened, ok!? Or i just won't draw you. Or i just won't tell you I'm drawing you... eh heh heh.

The story so far:
Irina (thereal gypsy boss slash lion tamer)
Anna( the gypsy princess)
DJ( the quiet sad gypsy)
Paola (the one that gets shit done. Fortuneteller?)
Sydney (the exotic dancer)
Grace(unicorn tamer)
Miles( tall awesome dude.)
Robert (beard dude, musician)
Kara (navigator)
Suzi(exotic dancer)
Gary (musician chello)
Colin (musician mandolin)
Joey (musician flute)

In short there is a gypsy circus traversing the country side looking to entertain people. One member of the tribe is not as merry as the rest of them, she contemplates her meaning as a gypsy. They arrive at a new city that welcomes their fanciful festivities. Dj meets a small child completely enthralled with the gypsy ‘magic.’ She is slightly brought out of her funk but then is depressed again when she sees their decrepit rundown circus, but the little girl doesn’t see it like that. This makes all the difference.

It doesn't seem like much but I have to shove it all in 5 pages.... wish me luck!

Cleo and Tony

An assignment to portray two people with different skintones in ink without using a wash. Not as easy as it sounds.

Long Weekend.

whheeewwww. What a long week/weekend. It seems things are in hyper speed now. Miles and I helped his mom move. Most of the stuff was already at the new apartment but in all the wrong rooms. I wasn't terribly helpful because I didn't know what was what or went where and Miles did all the heavy work. I mostly was there for emotional support. I felt rather pathetic, but I figure its better to be told what to do infrequently then have to redo everything i do wrong later. Moving is so much work. It's impossible to conceptualize how much work it will be. Especially since SHE HAS SO MUCH STUFF. I thought I had a lot. I'm destined to be a pack rat, my day was, my dad's mom was and I've already started. It scares me. I don't need all this junk but whenever I try to clear things out, I just end up rearranging it. I always get such happy memories when i find old junk. Its hard to throw that away knowing you probably won't remember that silly insignificant story without that physical cue. Anyways, my long weekend got longer when my train back from kalamazoo kept stopping every ten minutes because the brake mechanism was frozen. Sounds safe, huh? I got home at 3AM instead of 11:30 PM. Didn't go to morning class and my afternoon class was canceled. All I had to do was sit though an hour lecture and walk home under bright blue skies and find a letter from DJ. Best day ever. I hope I can be super-duper productive!

I'm trying to organize all the people to be in my minicomic novella and see who is really interested an who just thinks it'd be 'cool.' Plus I need better references than facebook pictures. It just won't cut it. I'll the have story by tonight.Or at least I'm supposed to. :D I have no idea what my conflict will be. Something gypsy-circus-esque. Oh lord help me. I'll probably post some of my sketches too. There are not nearly enough pictures on here. I have to suck it up and hope people won't be dissapointed when they see my comic rendition of them. I'm bound to insult someone eventually hopefully it just won't be too terribly. sheesh.

Speaking of pictures.....My shamrock is coming out of hibernation!!! It's so cool!!! It looked so dead and depressing all winter but I kept watering it keeping faith that it would grow back come spring. Well we're along ways from spring in Michigan, but that just made me even happier that it's already growing back. The only camera I have is my poopy phone one so you'll have to do with the poor quality. I love the little new ones in contrst to the big droopy ones that grew last week. I need to get some plant fertilizer. Where to get that on a college campus? no idea.

Second Post!!!

Hahahahaha. Usually when I start a journal or anything like it I forget about it after the first entry. The only thing I really do daily is take 'the pill' and talk to Miles on the phone. Hui didn't understand my storyboard. I don't blame her. i think someone who actually understood English would be confused. She's so nice and so smart, but she doesn't understand us!!!!!! And vice versa! I wish the japanese would hurry up with that translator headset thing already. link We have so much to learn from each other and language always seems to be getting in the way. I've really had a hitch-up with this 5 pg graphic novel thing. I hate calling it a 'comic' because I think its more than the Sunday funnies, but it's not quite a novel. Maybe a graphic novella? (lol) Someone's probably already invented that. Right now I have a gypsy circus/caravan with about 20 of my friends who want to be included. Eep. SO what happens next? and concludes in 5 pages? No idea. I think I'll just work on the character sketches. It'll come to me. Eventually. Hopefully.I'm having lunch at Momo Tea. Momo Tea Lunch > Cat Poop Lunch. George is sick. :/ I don;t think Suzi has the money to take him to the vet. I'm really scared for him. I certainly don't have the money. Sigghhh. One of the many reasons I didn't want a cat in our house. Don't take in an animal if you can't look after it, okay? Its not fair to anyone. :( Someday when I'm rich in famous I'll have a homeless animal plantation, but right now the cat needs a better home. Oh a mildly related note, I think George should be in my novella. Minus the sickness and poop.

First Entry

I feel like I should write something intense and momentous for the first blog... but that seems rather ridiculous for a blog titled "Little Thoughts Big Plans." Aaahhhh, I have so much to do and so little time. This is what I'm always saying. I think I like being busy though. Even if its stressful. I have to finish my story board for my Flash class tonight. I know exactly what I want it to look like. Until I start drawing. Eraser shreds will be everywhere!!! Welp, I better stop prattling and start doodling.
